US CPI Inflation Report: What It Means for the Markets Today
August 12, 2026 | July 2026 CPI Release
US CPI: What to Watch Today
The US Consumer Price Index (CPI) will be released today, August 12, and is expected to be a key market-moving event.
CPI measures changes in consumer prices and is closely watched because it can influence expectations for the Federal Reserve’s interest-rate policy.
For July, markets are expecting:
* Headline CPI: 3.4% YoY | Previous: 3.5% * Core CPI: 2.5% YoY | Previous: 2.6% * CPI MoM: 0.1% * Core CPI MoM: 0.2% (Reuters)
How Could It Impact the Market?
If inflation comes in higher than expected, the USD could strengthen as markets price in a more hawkish Federal Reserve outlook. This could put downward pressure on Gold (XAUUSD).
If inflation comes in lower than expected, the USD could weaken as expectations for tighter monetary policy ease, potentially supporting Gold and other risk assets.
The key for traders is not simply the CPI number, but the difference between the actual result and market expectations.
CPI → Fed Expectations → USD & Yields → Gold
With volatility likely to increase around the release, traders should wait for the initial market reaction and confirmation before taking a position.
